The Emery Spartans were unable to overcome a late San Juan offensive push in a 6-1 loss Friday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Locked in a scoreless tie throughout the first four innings, San Juan scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Broncos would add five more in the sixth to put the game out of reach and earn a season series split.

“It was a frustrating loss that came down to not playing fundamental baseball,” said manager Rob Smith. “Hopefully it gets the point across to the kids that each play is a big play.”

As a team the Spartans committed five errors in the field, which aided San Juan’s six run performance.

Cade Brazier struck out five from the mound in a 5.1 inning effort. Allowing seven hits Brazier was not tagged for a singled earned run. Kyson Stilson worked the final two innings in relief, allowing just one hit.

Senior Easton Gordon finished 2-3 at the plate, pushing his season average well above .500. Logan Healy and Jesse Barnett both connected on singles and finished 1-3. Stilson recorded the team’s lone RBI.

Friday’s loss dips Emery to 2-4 on the season, placing them fifth in Region 15. The win for San Juan is their first of league play, moving them to sixth place at 1-3.

The Spartans will now have a full week off for Spring Break before returning to the field on Tuesday, April 10 at home against the Manti Templars.
