The Emery County Historical Society would like to invite the public to join them to visit the Elgin Missile Site on Saturday, April 28. Individuals interested in attending the tour are asked to meet at 9:00 am at the Stake Center on Main Street in Huntington or at Mayors Park in Ferron or at the John Wesley Power Museum in Green River. The cost for the event is the price of annual dues which is $5.00 per person; the proceeds help to sponsor future events for the society.

Guests will enjoy a tour of the facility as they listen to the history by Tour Guide, JoAnn Chandler.  A portion of the facility was first used in the 1950s as a repurposed Union Carbide Uranium Mill. It wasn’t till 1964 that the Utah Launch Complex became a military installation and Cold War relic, which served as a test facility for Air Force and Army missile programs from 1964 until 1979. There were 244 launches during that time to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico of either Athena or Pershing missiles. The sprawling abandoned site is scheduled to be cleared so this tour being offered will be a final opportunity to learn about its history.

If you would like to join the society and receive reminders of all their activities/meetings just visit their Facebook page or email emerycountyhistory@gmail.com.
