Giovanni Pavoni logged another hat trick to lead the Carbon Dinos past the Richfield Wildcats 6-0 in the opening round of the 3A State Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon in Price.
Entering the championship tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 14, the Dinos had little problems with the Wildcats, the No. 5 seed from Region 15. The win marks the seventh in the last eight games for Carbon, extending an unbeaten streak that dates back to March 22.
Parker Humes, Luke Hansen and Brock Morris also found the back of the net in the dominating victory. Holding a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half, the Dinos scored three more goals in the final 40 minutes.
For the second time in three games Pavoni has scored three goals for Carbon, running his total to eight goals during that time frame. In 15 games this season the junior has scored 21 times, including four hat tricks.
Thursday’s win moves Carbon into the quarterfinals where they will play host to the Morgan Trojans on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.. Morgan, the No. 2 seed from Region 13, defeated Grand 5-0 Thursday afternoon.
The winner of Carbon/Morgan will advance to the semifinals at Alta High School on May 11 against either American Leadership Academy or Union. The 3A State Tournament format is true single elimination, meaning a loss brings an end to the season.
