The Carbon Dinos marched into the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championship bracket with back-to-back wins over Emery and Grand Saturday at Ernie Gardner Field in Helper.

After clinching the Region 14 crown with a 9-1 division record, the Dinos earned the right to play host to the opening two rounds of the tournament. Emery, Grand and Morgan made the trip to Helper, setting the stage for an interesting day of baseball.

Zac Bradley tossed a gem in the first game of the day, allowing just one hit while striking out four as Carbon earned a 9-0 win over the Emery Spartans.

Bradley’s stellar performance came with great run support as Cody Lowe finished 3-4 with three RBIs, including a three-run home run. Cesar Laya finished 3-4 in the box and also recorded three stole bases. Nate Olson and Collin Lewis recorded one RBI a piece.

The win over Emery moved Carbon into the second round against the Grand Red Devils, the No. 2 seed from Region 15. A back-and-forth contest turned in Carbon’s favor late as the Dinos earned the eventual 4-3 victory.

Remaining unbeaten as a starting pitcher this season, Cody Lowe pitched five solid innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs. Triton Abeyta recorded the final six outs, keeping Grand hit-less, while three batters.

Lending himself run support, Lowe finished 2-3 at the plate, bringing in two runs off of two doubles. Braxton Bennett also ended 2-3 with 2 RBIs and a triple. As a team Carbon logged five hits as a team.

The pair of wins on Saturday places Carbon in a quarterfinal matchup with the Grantsville Cowboys Thursday afternoon. The two teams join Richfield and Manti as the only four teams without a loss in the double-elimination tournament.

Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup with Grantsville will take place at Kearns High School at 11:00 a.m.. A win would place Carbon in the quarterfinals the following day at 4:30.
