The weather is warming up which means it’s time to enjoy some great fishing at one of the many lakes, reservoirs, ponds and/or streams close to home. The great thing about fishing is it’s an affordable, relaxing, enjoyable outing for the entire family.
“Down here in the valleys it feels almost like summer already, you know getting up into the 80s. But up high, winter is just barely coming to an end but there are some places that have opened up,” said Conservation Outreach Manager, Morgan Jacobsen. “Cleveland Reservoir up on the Manti is one of those, there is still ice on the water but a lot of the edges around the reservoir are starting to open up so people will be able to fish from shore here pretty soon.” Ice-off fishing tends to provide some excellent fishing because the warmer water temperatures draw the fish out from the deeper waters and they’re hungry for a decent meal.
“Grassy Lake up above Joe’s Valley the water leaves are low there but the fishing is really good. Be prepared for some mud around the shorelines,” stated Jacobsen. Anglers have had success catching tiger trout using white jigs and spinners. Another great lake that is now accessible is Wrigley Springs Reservoir where fishermen has used white jigs, spinners, worms and PowerBait to catch trout.
To keep up on the fishing around the southeastern region individuals are encouraged to subscribe to the fishing report. “You can go to wildlife.utah.gov and under the fishing tab you click on the fishing report and there’s an option to subscribe to those,” explained Jacobsen. Anglers will find that the fishing report shares what different tactic fisherman are using for that particular lake and any other important information regarding the lakes, reservoirs, ponds and streams.
