The Emery Lady Spartans failed to qualify for the second day of the 3A State Championship Tournament, ending the golf season just outside the state’s top eight Tuesday afternoon at the Cove View Golf Course in Richfield.

Led by senior Lainee Jensen, Emery completed the first day of competition with a 416 team score, falling just six strokes short of the cut. Needing an individual score of 90 to qualify individually, Jensen finished with a 91.

“We finished second out of all Region 15 teams,” said head coach Tom Hansen.”Unfortunately that wasn’t enough. The greens were much faster than our home course at Millsite.”

Entering as the No. 2 seed from Region 15, Emery appeared to be playing their best golf of the season. With only one returner from last year’s state championship team (Jensen), several young players stepped up to make a push.

Angie Neilson delivered the team’s second best score with a 107, just topping Sydney Alton’s 108. The fourth score went to Teah Lowery at 110. Kayla Winn and Reagan Sitterud both competed, but did not qualify final scores.

“Lainee’s leadership was crucial for the success the team had throughout the season,” said Hansen. “Two freshman, Angie Jensen and Sydney Alton, were second and third for us and their play bodes well for the future.”

The final eight schools and the remaining individuals who qualified for the second day will wrap up the golf season Wednesday afternoon.
