The Carbon Dinos were unable to keep pace with the Grantsville Cowboys in an eventual 6-0 loss in the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon in Kearns.
Fighting for a chance to advance to the semifinals on Friday, Carbon remained tied with Grantsville through the first four innings. Finally breaking the tie in the fifth, the Cowboys pulled away in the final two innings to secure the win.
“It was a tough today against a good Grantsville team that’s been ranked number one all year long,” said manager Jeff Cisneros. “We didn’t take advantage of some situations that we should have. We left runners on base and you can’t do that at this level.”
Through five innings Carbon pitcher Cody Lowe had been dominate on the mound, giving the offense plenty of time to take control of the game. Despite multiple runners in scoring position the Dinos left several potential runs on base.
“We kept Cody (Lowe) under the 60 pitch count so he can throw again on Saturday,” said Cisneros. “It may have been his best game on the mound all year and we just did not get him any run support.”
As a team Carbon registered five hits throughout contest. The Dinos had out hit Grantsville 4-2 inside the fifth inning, despite trailing 1-0 on the scoreboard.
Thursday’s loss puts Carbon in the one-loss bracket where each game will be an elimination contest from here on out.
“It puts us in a real bind where we have to win five games to win a state title, but that can be done,” Cisneros said. “If we can pick our heads up and be ready to go on Friday I think we can get right back into this thing.”
Carbon will return to the field Friday morning at 11:00 against either Summit Academy or Union. A win would place Carbon in another contest later in the evening at 7:00 against either Richfield, Judge Memorial or Juab.
