Castle Country Radio is thrilled to host their Annual Pie Auction on Wednesday, June 13 beginning at 9:00 am. The auction will go live on KARB Kickin’ Country FM 98.3 and 106.7 to allow listeners to participate.  The event started over 10 years ago to help raise money to assist residents in Carbon, Emery and Grand counties who are fighting cancer.

“Everything will take place here at the radio station before we use to be at a different location with the pies but now we do it all here at the radio station. So, in the conference room we have pies galore in the fridges and everything,” said Office Manager, Ann Anderson. “We have about 50 pies that we auction off. We put different kind of merchandise with the different pies.” Items bundled with the pies can be home décor, metal signs, restaurant and product certificates, autographed Utah Jazz basketball, plus some University of Utah Football tickets and some concert tickets.

The local businesses in both Carbon and Emery counties lend a helping hand by donating many items from their stores in an effort to bring the value of each pie to around $200.00. Without the generosity of the businesses, the auction would not be possible. Customers who purchase a pie from the auction may count it towards a tax deduction for 2018 income taxes.

All of the money raised during the pie auction stays local and managed by Southeast Utah Community Development Corporation and since 2011 CDC has been able to donate about $50,000.00 in the form of $100.00 fuels cards from the proceeds.

“You know when we decided to do it for fuel cards we wanted to do is so that we were actually impacting and help local residents. Unfortunately, we all know someone that has cancer and we know what the burden is of having to go to doctors’ appointments,” said Anderson. The process to receive a fuel card is made simple for individuals who are residents of Carbon, Emery and Grand counties. Regardless of the patient’s financial situation, they are eligible for a fuel card once a fiscal year which runs from July 1 through the end of June. The fuel cards are issued on Wednesdays only by contacting Anderson at (435) 637-1167. The patient or spouse will need to answer a few general questions about treatment for the program’s records.

The Pie Auction not only funds the Fuel Card program but also donates to the Thomas B Anderson College Scholarship. This is proudly named in honor of the radio station’s former owner who passed away in 2012 after a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. He believed and understood the importance of continuing one’s education so it was only fitting for his family to develop a $2,500.00 scholarship in his name. The scholarship is awarded to a well deserving Carbon, Emery or Grand county student who had or has cancer in order to further their education.
