Emery High School senior Tavon Cook and junior Gage Mangum earned recognition for their excellence on the soccer field with a 3A All-State First Team selection, it was announced Monday morning.
Cook, a three-year starter at goalkeeper for the Spartans, was an intricate part to the team’s success throughout the season. Allowing just eight goals in 10 region games, Cook recorded eight shutouts throughout the entire season.
Mangum, who received the mention for his play as a defender, played in every game this season for the Spartans. His stellar athleticism complemented Cook’s ability to form one of the more potent defensive squads in the 3A classification.
Seniors Parker Sermon and Tanyon Allred both received honorable mentions for their on-field contributions.
The honorable mention for Allred is his second in as many years. Playing midfielder throughout the season, Allred finished second on the team in goals with six. Sermon logged a team-high ten goals while playing forward.
Ending the regular season with a 7-2-1 record the Spartans won their first Region 15 championship. The season came to an end in the opening round of the state tournament with a 1-0 loss to Union.
