The Price Raptors will continue the American Legion baseball season with a home league contest Friday night against Salem Hills at 5:00 p.m..
Entering Friday’s tilt 1-12 overall and 0-6 in league play, Price has struggled to find its footing in a talented pool of teams. Despite the losses, the team continues to fight night in and night out.
“I’ve stressed to the boys that the division we play in has a lot of great ball players,” said manager Willie Ellington. “My guys are really determined to hang in there and finish out the season. They are working hard to get that first division win.”
Playing ten of the first 13 games one the road, Price will now have the luxury of playing seven of the next eight at home.
After dropping nine of the first 10 games of the season, the Raptors traveled to Green River, Wyoming for a non-league tournament this past weekend. While the team played competitive baseball against a variety of the competition, the end result was an 0-3 trip.
“We’ve had some really impressive innings and plays during the season,” said Ellington. “The frustration comes when we make mental mistakes. We just need to work on our hitting to get our offense rolling.”
Price shares the Southern Utah Division with Helper, St. George, Dixie, Springville and West Lake. The top five teams at season’s end will qualify for the State Championship Tournament July 19-21 in Pleasant Grove.
Sharing the same league record as West Lake, Price still holds a formidable chance to qualify for the season ending tournament. Ellington believes his team’s confidence and attitude will dictate how the final month of the season rounds out.
“I think there’s been a lot of improvement attitude wise,” Ellington said. “You can’t make errors against these teams in this league. I think the guys are starting to realize this, and because of that they are playing better defense.”
Following Friday’s home contest Price will travel to West Lake for a monumental league game on Tuesday, June 26.
