Castle Country area has seen some hazy, smoke-filled skies the last few days. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood took time on his weekly update to share insight about where he believes all of the smoke is coming from.
“We’re 90 percent sure that that smoke is coming out of California with those giant fires. The whole state of California is on fire. It’s bad, it’s the worse they’ve seen over there in years and year. But we do have a fire burning here in Carbon County as well,” said Wood. The Atone Fire up in Emma Park was started by lightning on Saturday and crews have 80 percent of it contained with the help of two aircrafts and five fire engines, along with several firefighters.
Camping season is still in full swing and with the bow hunt just right around the corner its best to know what fire restrictions are in place. “Call the Forest Service and ask them where the fire closures, err on the side of caution, I would be careful, I would not want to start a fire; with the rains and the things that we’ve had, maybe the fire restrictions will change,” said Wood. The Carbon County Sheriff’s Department Demolition Derby is taking place on Saturday, August 11. “The Demolition Derby is going to be great this year. We’re so excited about it. We have over 30 cars signed up right now. This derby is their main fundraiser, that’s where their funding comes from to operate on for the next year and we’re ready, it’s going to be a good show,” stated Wood. Tire King located at 535 East Main Street in Price is the hub for drivers who still would like to register, obtain a hard copy of the rules and direct any other derby questions to.
