Brady Gagon posted a team low 79 to the lead the Carbon Dinos past the competition in the golf season and region opener Wednesday afternoon at Roosevelt Golf Course.
Ending with a team score of 334 the Dinos topped both Union and Delta, who finished tied for second with a 336. Juab’s 373 and Providence Hall’s 389 rounded out the top five. American Leadership Academy finished sixth with a 425, followed by Maeser Prep in last with a 489.
“I’m really proud of how the boy’s battled in the first meet,” said first year head coach Brett Johnson. “We had a bunch of holes that turned into a few struggles, but everyone gave 100-percent and that’s all I can ask for.”
Carson Martines managed to shake off a nine on hole two to finish with an 83. Kaden Slavensky also shot an 83, adding to the depth of Carbon’s team performance. Both Nick Olson and Jordan Penovich shot an 89, while Tyler Yokavich notched a 90. Only the top four scores go towards the team’s final score.
Despite multiple bogey’s late in the afternoon, Gagon managed the second low-score of the entire meet finishing just two strokes behind Delta’s Jake Henrie. Martines, Slavensky and Nelson all finished tied for fifth individually.
Carbon entered Wednesday’s meet with a two-year unbeaten streak in region play. That unbeaten streak will continue into next week’s home meet, where Johnson believes his team will drastically improve the overall score.
“I can tell we had some nerves in the first outing, which means we should be a lot more at ease next week,” Johnson said. “I would expect this team to shoot a 310 or less at our home course.”
Following next Wednesday’s home meet the Dinos will travel Spanish Oaks, the home course of American Leadership Academy, on Aug. 21.
