The Emery Lady Spartans used a dominating defensive performance to earn a 3-0 win over the Payson Lions Tuesday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Entering the contest 1-1 on the season, Emery opened a 1-0 lead entering the break. The second half played out in similar fashion as the Lady Spartans added two more goals, but again kept Payson off of the scoreboard.

Alexis Winter, Morgan Hurdsman and Sydney Stilson all found the back of the net once in the win. Kiri Cook recorded her first shutout of the year at goalie, helping the team bounce back from a 4-1 loss to Ben Lomond on Friday.

Tuesday’s win is the only contest of the week for Emery, giving the team a full week off before returning to the field. With only two non-league tilts remaining before the region opener, the Lady Spartans will travel to meet Beaver on Aug. 21.

The Region 14 opener will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at home against North Sanpete.
