Students in the Carbon School District are concluding their first full week of the 2018-2019 school year. Many parents and students are required to complete the usual paperwork as part of the registration process parents contact information, emergency contact etc. There is one form that many parents overlook because they “assume” they will not qualify this would be the Free and Reduced Lunch Application.

“Everyone’s applications from last year have expired and so we do need everybody to re-sign up for those,” stated Director of Child Nutrition, Heidi Anderson. “We need everybody to do this, this year we are running the risk of losing a few of our schools’ Title I funds and the way that they get those is through this free and reduced lunch application.” The free and reduced numbers within the district help to fund the summer lunch program, as well as assist the district to get paraprofessionals in the schools. The application for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program can be found on the school district’s website at https://www.carbonschools.org/ click the Aspire SIS tab and it will take parents through the process. If parents do not have access to the internet a hard copy of the application may be obtained only at the district office located at 251 West 400 North. All families with students in the district are strongly encouraged to complete an application by October 5 regardless of whether the family meets the income guidelines or not.

The district believes the online payment option that was developed last year has proven to be a quick and convenient way for parents to put funds on their student’s meal account. “Through our online store We can do $5.00 increments or you can pay for a quarter, semester or a year long if you would like to,” explained Anderson. The online payment system can be found on the district’s website under Student Services and will not be able to show parents their student’s account balance that can be obtained on the SIS parent account.

The Child Nutrition Department will have their new website up and running in the next few weeks this will allow students along with their parents to access the menu and nutritional values. Anderson explains another tech-savvy tool they will implement, “We’re also looking at doing a daily post of what’s on the menu on Facebook, Twitter trying to get everybody informed about what’s on the menu.” All of the school’s Nutrition Services are looking forward to providing delicious and nutritional meals to students and faculty members for another school year.
