PRICE – Women’s Soccer picked up two wins against non-conference opponents on Friday and Saturday to remain undefeated.

On Friday they defeated Sheridan College 2-1 on the new USU Eastern soccer field.

In the 19′ minute freshman Logan Duran put the ball in the back of the net to put the Eagles at 1-0 advantage.

Duran’s goal against Sheridan is her second of the season.

The Eagles on defense came up with four saves against Sheridan on Friday with Mya Massey in goal.

Just before halftime freshman Morgan Cragun scored a goal with thirty seconds left to put the Eagles up 2-0.

In the second half the Eagles allowed a goal when Kristen Franke put the ball in above the reach of Massey to cut the lead to 2-1.

However, that would be the last time either team would score as the Eagles’ defense would not allow much action on the Sheridan side of the field.

USU Eastern sophomore McKenna Wiscombe said that it was the transition in practice from focusing more on defense to offense that helped get the win against Sheridan.

“The last week of practice we focused on offense and that really helped us gain chemistry with each other. I think that helped us yesterday because we were able to look for those offensive attacks instead of always being on defense,” said Wiscombe.

The next day the Eagles defeated Trinidad State 4-0.

“We did really well at combining and making simple passes and working as a team,” said USU Eastern freshman Brooke Stoker.

Against Trinidad State, the Eagles got the scoring early with an unassisted goal by Cragun with the first five minutes of the game.

Freshman Claire Boman scored in the 23 minute off a free kick with an assist from Ellie Putnam to extend the Eagles lead to 2-0.

The Eagles had lots of chances to put them up more in the first half with 11 shot attempts. Trinidad only had two shots in the first half.

In the second half the Eagles remained in control of the game and did not allow a shot during the first 25 minutes of the half.

“The defense did really well at staying shape and staying compact and making sure their was a second defender there,” said Stoker.

On offense the Eagles didn’t take advantage of some big opportunities until the end.

“Both games we controlled the game but we had multiple opportunities in front of us. Scoring is attitude and we got to put it in, we were five feet in front of the goal and you have to put it in,” said USU Eastern Head Coach Ammon Bennett.

With less than three minutes left to play, sophomore Morgan Hall scored a goal with an assist from Wiscombe.

USU Eastern sophomore Sylvie Call added the final goal of the game less then a minute later.

“Overall we are getting better each day but we still have things to work on,” said Bennett.

The Eagles now are 3-0 on the season and will open up conference next Friday and Saturday against the College of Southern Nevada.

Friday’s game against CSN will start at 1 p.m. at the USU Eastern soccer field north of campus.
