The Emery Spartans suffered a second consecutive region loss, this time to the Morgan Trojans, 36-0 on the road Friday night.
Entering the contest 1-1 in division play, the Spartans traveled on the road to meet the classification’s No. 1 ranked team. Despite a closely contested first quarter, Morgan pulled away with a 28-point second period.
Trailing 8-0 at the end of the first, the Spartans held an opportunity to tie the game at the beginning of the second. Faced with a first-and-goal from the five yard line, Emery failed to cross the goal line and had a field goal blocked to end the possession.
Morgan junior quarterback Carter Thackeray found success with a majority of different receivers, tossing two touchdowns in the process. Porter Giles and Tyson Hurd both scored one touchdown to help the Trojans march to 3-0 in region play.
Friday’s loss dips Emery to 1-2 in division action, placing the Spartans in a fourth place tie with the Carbon Dinos. Emery is currently one game ahead of Judge Memorial and one back of the Union Cougars.
After playing the first three region games on the road, the Spartans will return to Castle Dale for the final two regular season games of the season. Up first will be a meeting with the Union Cougars, followed by Grantsville on Oct. 12.
Friday’s game against Union will air live on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM. Coverage will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by kick-off at 7:00.
