The Emery Spartans wrapped up the 2018 golf season with an eighth-place finish in the 3A State Championship Tournament at the Meadow Brook Golf Course in Taylorsville.
Qualifying for the second and final day of competition as the eighth-place team on Monday, the Spartans finished 25-strokes behind seventh-place Grand. Ending the first day with a team score of 335, Emery shot a 352 on Tuesday, running the team score to 687.
Morgan claimed the state championship after shooting a dominating 587. Judge Memorial finished in second, followed by Richfield in third. Union and Carbon rounded out the top five.
“We played very well at state on Monday and Tuesday.” said head coach Kevin Reynolds. “The team shot their best score of the season to make the cut on the first day so that we could continue play on the second day.”
The Spartans were led by standout Oakley Toomer who finished second overall individually with a score of 144. Toomer, entering the second day tied for second, finished just one-stroke back of Morgan’s Nathan Preslar.
Shaidyn Killpack finished with the second low score on the team, firing a 178 over the two-day tournament. Taylor Lindsey was third with a 181, followed by Logan Healey’s 192.
The state tournament brings an end to the golf season for Emery, who finished fifth overall in Region 15.
