Mary passed away peacefully on October 22, 2018 in Mesquite Nevada shortly after her 93rd Birthday. She was born on October 11, 1925 in New Jersey to Nick and Irene Markakis. The family later moved to Carbon County where her father Nick worked in the local Coal Mines. Mary spent her childhood in Price and graduated from Carbon High School in 1943.   She married Gus Piantes shortly after he returned from military service in WWII. The two newlyweds needed a sofa so Mary went to work. Her intention was to work just long enough to pay for the sofa, but she ended up retiring 35 years later as office manager from the State Health Department.

Gus and Mary had two children. Tom arrived first and Irene came along 5 years later. Mary had a sign in her office that said “God respects you when you work, but he loves it when you play”. This is how Mary lived her life. She worked hard and played harder. Her favorite past times were traveling in their motor home, cruises, spending time at their cabin in Scofield, and frequent travel to Las Vegas to play black jack. The family came to call her the “shark”, and her black jack skills remained sharp right up to the end.

Mary was the first child born to Nick and Irene, followed by Alex, Mike, Mitch, Jay and Catherine. She is survived by her children Irene (Kim) Tomsic and Tom Piantes, grandson Troy (Helena) Piantes, and brother Jay Markakis. She was preceded in death by parents Nick and Irene, husband Gus Piantes, brothers Alex Markakis, Mike Markakis, Mitch Markakis, and sister Catherine Haaser.
