****UPDATE ON HOMICIDE FROM CHIEF WINDER****

Yesterday, October 28, 2018, the Moab City Police Department responded to a tragic situation involving the death of one of our residents.

The incident is currently under active investigation, and as such we are unable to provide specific details. While the details of the incident must remain protected this agency believes it is important to recognize several fundamental issues.

First and foremost the Moab Police Department wishes to extend our deep and sincere condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Edgar Luna Najera, date of birth February 20, 1988. Mr. Najera tragically and unnecessarily lost his life in yesterday’s violent incident.

The Moab Police Department would also like to extend its sympathies and support to the other individuals involved in this incident. The question of responsibility is and shall remain the purview of the criminal justice system, however regardless of the eventual determination, in this case, several individuals have been forever affected by this incident. This agency will ensure justice to those who have committed these acts and support for those who were victimized.

Finally, and on a somewhat personal note, I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep and sincere appreciation for the incredible members of the Moab City Police Department, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah State Bureau of Investigation. The response and efforts expended by these agencies over the last 24 hours was indeed a demonstration of what law enforcement is supposed to be. The Officers, Deputies, and Agents involved began their response in the very early morning hours, dealing with the chaos and trauma of a violent fatality. Through the day Agents of the Utah State Bureau of Investigation boarded a helicopter, flew to Moab and assisted in the crime scene and forensic investigation. They also provided valuable language resources and other technical support. The State and local agencies continued working until the very late hours of last night contacting witnesses, victims and seeking to apprehend those responsible. These professionals may be limited in number, but collectively they are an incredible force.

I know incidents, like that which we experienced last night, are truly about those who are affected. We must not and will not forget Mr. Najera. The paramount responsibility of law enforcement is to protect the community. I can assure you the professionals in this community do this better than many I have ever had the privilege of working with.

Sympathies and respect,

Chief Jim Winder
