November is National Diabetes Awareness month so Castleview Hospital along with Price Lions Club would like to do their part in educating the community on this complex and often misunderstood disease.
“Diabetes is a lot prevalent in our society than we think. Pre-diabetes is actually 1 in 3 adults actually already have it and are not diagnosed and do not know that they have it,” said Diabetes Dietician, JoAnn Stout (st-OW-t). “Being able to talk to your physician, have a few tests and make sure you don’t because we can keep it away a lot longer. We can keep you healthy and that’s what we want to do.” Individuals with type 2 can go undiagnosed for three to four years if not more.
The hospital will host an informational forum on November 14 at 6:00 pm inside the south entrance and all community members are invited. “The theme for this year for Diabetes Awareness Month is Everyday Reality. We’ll have dinner, it’s at 6 o’clock and I am going to be the speaker there, kind of give you some basic information about diabetes, some things that can help you, answer questions,” stated Stout. This is a great opportunity to gain knowledge of the disease and learn about the resources that are available either for the individual attending the event or for a loved one.
The truth is that diabetes can change your life to be an Everyday Reality however in learning how to identifying risk factors, knowing the importance of getting a screening and addressing any other questions one might have at the event can impact overall good health.
