Each week Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood stops by the Castle Country Radio Station to share safety tidbits that are relevant to what is taking place around the area. The recent cooler temperatures have resulted in many residents taking to warming up their vehicles in the morning before heading out for the day.

“It’s a good idea when you go out to do that, just kind of look around be aware of your surroundings. Make sure that there’s not someone hanging around your neighborhood that you don’t recognize. Make sure you’re not being a target,” said Wood. Most newer cars have the automatic start which keeps the car secure while running but if individuals have an older vehicle that requires the key to remain in the vehicle, owners may consider using a spare key to lock up the vehicle as it warms up. Although individuals may feel that their car is secure and safe it’s still a good idea to keep a close eye on it while unoccupied.

“Keep an eye out for anything suspicious like that and of course this time of year we have deliveries, lots of packages. So be a good neighbor. If your neighbor has a package sitting on their porch let them know it’s there or maybe even work something out with them where you can pick it up and that they will pick up yours,” explained Wood. Neighborhoods who step up efforts to look out for one another promote respect and trust among one another for a healthy community.

Another scam has been making its way around the area and Sheriff Wood explains how to protect yourself, “If they say they are a law enforcement agency and that you need to bail a loved one out of jail then call your local law enforcement agency on a landline yourself. Don’t even fall for the logos. They will steal our logos and send out social media things that look like it’s coming from our Sheriff’s Office.” If you aren’t sure and it doesn’t feel right, it’s most likely a scam and individuals are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement officials.
