Each week the Carbon School District highlights a school within the district and this week was Bruin Point Elementary in East Carbon. Principal Dina Wise and Rising Raptor Coordinator, Kaylynn Hepworth both took time to come in to share the latest happenings taking place at the school.
“Our Student Leaders attended the BYU Leadership Conference in October and then they have a canned food drive going on right now,” explained Principal Wise. “They have come up with some pretty unique things they’ll do. So, they are building a tower of cans and when they get to two feet the Student Leaders are going to dress up like a character from a story and go around to read to all the classes.” When the tower reaches three feet, they will allow students to pick a book choosing to read to the group of Student Leaders. Once the tower reaches four feet, all teachers have to run around the school twice. As soon as the tower reaches the final goal of six feet, Principal Wise will get on top of the roof to throw candy out to the student body.
Bruin Point is very proud of their Rising Raptor After-School Program and all of the activities the come with it. “Just recently we were invited to go sing at the big parent night held at the district office, they invited us to sing the National Anthem, it’s the second time this year we were invited to sing at the USU-E Volleyball game,” said Hepworth. “So, our kids are quite liking that activity and we like to get them into higher education campuses to let them feel the excitement there. So those are two big activities we’ve had lately.” Another event that took place for students to share their vocal skills was during their Veterans Day program that was held to recognize and meet local Veterans.
Other fun clubs that are held as part of the Rising raptor After-School Program are Sewing Club, Cooking Club, Legos and Fitness Day. There is a time that is set aside every day for academics too such as reading and mathematics. This is either silent reading for a certain amount of time than sharing what the student has read with the group. Students can enjoy time practicing their mathematics while playing games which makes learning more fun.
