The Emery Lady Spartans moved to 3-0 on the season with a 74-45 victory over the Union Cougars in Roosevelt Tuesday evening.

Seniors Megan Jensen and Kacelyn Toomer both scored 17 points to lead the Lady Spartans in a strong offensive performance. Ambree Bennett contributed 13 points off of the bench in a reserve effort.

“Union is a pretty good ball club with some great players,” said head coach Lynn Tuttle. “It’s a pretty good deal when you can go to their place and come out on top by 29.”

Holding a 43-31 lead at the end of the first half, Emery picked up the pace defensively as they held Union to just 14 points over the final two quarters. The hefty lead again gave Tuttle an opportunity to play his second unit.

Starters Kinlee Toomer and Morgan Hurdsman helped push the offensive production, combining for 16 points. A total of eight players scored at least two for Emery in the win.

Still unbeaten on the young season, the Lady Spartans have picked up right where they left off last season. In three games this season Emery has developed a win margin of 31 points, one of the highest differentials in the state.

“We’ve done a lot of good things. Definitely doing more good things than bad, but plenty we can improve on,” said Tuttle. “I felt like the bench came in tonight and gave us a lift. We had no letdowns defensively and that’s very encouraging.”

The Lady Spartans will return home on Thursday for a meeting with 5A Springville. Thursday’s contest will be the first of two straight home games, with the second coming next Tuesday against Beaver.
