Sally Mauro Elementary has closed out their holiday fun with their annual food drive and candy cane sales – both of which were a huge success.

“Our student government sponsors a food drive every year around Thanksgiving time and we do a contest that the class that raises the most food gets to throw pies at me. This year we were able to raise over 2,000 pounds of food to take to the food bank,” said Principal Jared Hardy. The class that raised the most was Mrs. Cox’s third-grade class who were excited to have the opportunity to fling a few pies at their principal.

Student government came up with another unique idea in order to give back to the community by hosting a candy cane sale at the school. “We really just like having the kids being able to be the ones that are helping to donate to the community. We’re going to take the money, all the proceeds from it and we’re going to donate to a family in our area,” explained Principal Hardy. This is a great way for students to learn the importance of “giving” during the holiday season.

Not only is this the last week of school before the holiday break but it is also the last full week of the second quarter. “We come back from Christmas break and we have I believe three days and second quarter is over and we’re at the halfway point of the school year already,” stated Principal Hardy. Once the quarter is over, the school holds an assembly for the entire school to award outstanding second quarter students with Bull Pin Awards.

At the beginning of the school year, the entire school district was challenged to increase and improve their reading skills throughout the entire school year by Superintendent Hatch.  “We’ve seen tremendous growth from our students ready wise and we’ve been checking their reading levels mid-year here and our students have come so far in their reading and they’re going to be able to keep going far if they can keep ready at home 20 minutes a night,” said Principal Hardy. Students and parents are reminded to bring back December reading calendars so they may get credit for ready over the holiday break.

Winter Break for the Carbon School District will be from December 21, 2018, through January 2, 2019, with school set to resume on Thursday, January 3, 2019.
