Low temperatures have been quite frigid for residents but it also can be just as unbearable for the four-legged furry residents of Carbon County.
“Just make sure you are thinking of your best friend during this time because it’s extremely cold,” stated Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood. “You need to feed them extra in the winter time that’s how they generate body heat is through there nutrition, make sure that they have water available all day long and that’s hard to do because it freezes pretty fast.” Pet owners can purchase heated pet bowls from their local pet store or for a temporary fix can add a bit of cooking oil, sugar or salt to the water. If the pet’s diet allows for it bumping up the protein and fat can help the pet’s coat during the winter months.
Pet owners are urge to bring in their pets at night when the temperatures are extremely low. “If you can bring them in, bring them in your laundry room or somewhere you can bring them in the house let them stay nice and toasty. They can take it for a while but they need a chance to get warmed back up and there’s things you can do if you don’t want to bring your pet in. They make the heated pads you can put in their doghouse, you can put a heat light in there, there is various things you can do,” explained Sheriff Wood. The heated pads and heat lamps are very affordable. If the dog is a shorthaired pooch a doggie sweater can help keep them warm too.
