The number of snow storms that have hit our area can be very dangerous up in the high country and it’s important to know how to stay safe.

“The avalanche danger is extreme right now for the mountains right now with the moisture we had early on and then the ice and then light snow and then all this heavy snow we’ve had in the last few days it’s a serious risk,” said Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood. It’s important that individuals headed to the backcountry know to be prepared for any situation.

First, read the avalanche forecast and weather forecast staying informed is one of the most important keys to avalanche safety.  Secondly, never go out alone, take someone with you, let family & friends know the general area you plan to visit.  Lastly, carry proper equipment such as a beacon, shovel and/or rescue equipment. “I would rather have that stuff and not never need it than the one time you need it and not have it at all,” stated Sheriff Wood. Once at your destination constantly evaluate avalanche conditions especially wind-driven snow and steep slopes.
