At approximately 1629 on 13 February 2019 the Moab City Police Department responded to the Moab Charter School located at 358 E. 300 S. on a report of a suspicious male subject. The subject was reported to have entered a room at the school occupied by staff, parents and students who were preparing the room for an event. The subject began acting erratically, causing those present to be concerned for their safety. A school staff member contacted the subject and escorted him off of school property. The incident was then reported to Grand County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch and officers from Moab City Police Department and Utah Highway Patrol responded to the area.

A short time later a UHP Trooper located the subject walking away from the area of the school. The trooper detained the subject, locating a handgun during a subsequent search of his backpack.

At no time during the original incident did the subject brandish or display the weapon, nor were any other schools or areas impacted by this incident. All school staff, parents and students are safe and unharmed. Officers will maintain extra patrol at all Moab area schools as detectives continue the investigation. The subject is in custody and has been transported to the Grand County Jail.
