Saturday night the Emery Spartans defeated the South Summit Wildcats 73-64 and find themselves advancing to the quarterfinals of the state tournament in Richfield on Thursday.

The Spartans came out and  opened up a 20-14 lead by the end of the first quarter and then went on a 16-0 run in the second, but South Summit would keep it close and competitive in the second half, Emery outscored the Wildcats 24-16 in the third and pulling out the victory in the end.

Leading the way for the Spartans was senior Kyson Stilson with a game high 35 points, going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line and also added three rebounds to go with five steals. Junior Kyler Wilstead scored 13 to go with his four rebounds and senior Cade Brazier had nine points, the Spartans also shot 78% from the free throw line and 52% from the field. The Spartans look to build on this win as they will prepare for Grand Thursday.

South Summit was led by senior Jake Rydalch with 12 points, senior Logan Davis scored 12 also. Senior Bruce Mitchell had eight points to go with seven rebounds. The Wildcats had four players score in double figures and shot 49% from the field and 50% from the free throw line. South Summit played well enough to keep the game close but they didn’t have enough to come away with the win.

Emery will play a familiar opponent in Grand having split the season series with each team winning on their own floor. Grand ended the season in 4th place in Region 15 and Emery finished 5th. The two teams will meet for the last time this season  on Thursday at 9:30 am in Richfield at the Sevier Valley Center.
