The Emery Lady Spartans marched past the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championship Tournament with a hefty 75-44 win over the Morgan Trojans Thursday night at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

Met by a physical brand of basketball from the Lady Trojans, Emery led 16-9 at the end of the opening quarter. Defensively the Lady Spartans changed the course of the game in the second quarter, taking a 36-17 at the half.

Megan Jensen delivered a game-best 17 points, connecting on seven-of-ten attempts in limited action. Jensen also managed to grab seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the win.

Morgan Hurdsman helped boost a slow start to the offense by scoring the team’s first eight points of the game as she finished with 14. Kacelyn Toomer and Bailey Huggard both scored ten, while Kiri Cook delivered seven.

Morgan received a solid performance from guard Sydney Cragun, who ended with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists. Ashlyn Morrell just missed a double-double with ten points and eight boards, while Jacie House finished with nine.

Thursday’s win moves Emery’s massive winning streak to 38, while placing the team in the semifinals Friday afternoon against the Juab Wasps.

Juab defeated Judge Memorial in Thursday’s closest game, outscoring the Bulldogs by six points in the final minute to secure a 48-43 win.
