The Carbon Lady Dinos opened the track and field season with a first place finish at the Red Rock Invitational Saturday afternoon in Moab.
Competing against seven other schools the Lady Dinos accumulated 200 points, easily topping second place Montezuma-Cortez’s 149.5 point performance. Grand finished in a distant third, followed by San Juan and Emery.
The Carbon boy’s team secured a third-place finish with a total of 109 points. Grand protected their home turf with a 184-point first place performance, followed by Montezuma-Cortez. Emery and Monticello completed the top-five.
“It has been a different track season this year with all of the snow we’ve had, making it hard to get on the track,” said head coach Jimmy Jewkes. “We’ve only had about a week of good, solid practice. We went down to the meet expecting it to be rough, and we had a good outing.”
The Lady Dinos were led by four first place finishes, including Megan Swasey in the 100 meter hurdles. Emma Christensen topped the field in the high jump and Marianna Molinar scored the top throw in the javelin.
To no surprise the Carbon girls 4X100 group ran to first place as Makenna Blanc, Lyndee Mower, Harley Migliori and Paiten Thomas finished in 54.47. San Juan ended in second at 55.31.
Junior Carson Frame claimed first place with an outstanding performance in the long jump on the boy’s side of the track. Despite multiple top three-finishes for the boy’s team, Frame was the only member to to log a top place.
“We had a lot of good performances with the boy’s team,” said Jewkes. “We didn’t have as many first place finishes that we have in the past, but that speaks to the depth of the team. We really did well in scoring in bunches.”
Carbon will now focus on the second meet of the season, the Old Capital One Invitational, in Millard this Saturday. The following week will mark the first of two home meets with the Carbon Invitational on Saturday, March 23.
