The third quarter is coming to an end at Sally Mauro Elementary and with that comes some student recognition at a school assembly.

“So, the end of every quarter we have what we call the Bull Pin awards. The students set goals at the first of each quarter and as they reach those goals in ELA – English, Language, Arts, Math and behavior – as they reach those, we give awards out for them. So, we will be doing that for our third quarter on the 22nd,” said Principal Jared Hardy. The Bull Pin awards on March 22 are a way for the school to reward students for their academic efforts, achievements and contributions to the school.

The fourth quarter is a significant time for students as they will begin year-end testing in April. Principal Hardy had some important tips for parents as their students prepare, “The best way to do that is consistent attendance during this time – the teachers are working to help the kids get ready for that. They’re trying to work with the students to catch them up on things that they may be struggling on. We’ll be starting testing towards the end of April so those three or four weeks from the end of April to the middle of May is pretty important so the more the kids can be there the better it is for them to get ready for that.” Any parents with questions or concerns about the end of year testing may contact the school.

At the beginning of the school year Superintendent, Lance Hatch challenged the entire district to improve their reading skills so Principal Hardy took that challenge and added his unique twist to inspire his students, “We’re still pushing reading, we’re trying to reach our goal of 900,000 minutes for the year. I told all the classes that if we reach that goal and students have been turning in their reading calendars get to throw water balloons at me at the end of the year.” This seems to have kept students enthusiastic and determined about reading this school year.
