The Emery Spartans were unable to match an offensive explosion from the Richfield Wildcats, falling 10-0 in five innings Friday afternoon in Richfield.
Meeting for the second and final time in the regular season, the Spartans trailed 1-0 going into the fourth inning. Richfield plated nine runs in the bottom half of the frame, before closing the game out with a flawless top half in the fifth.
Held to just two hits and two walks throughout the tilt, Emery generated very few scoring opportunities. Friday’s loss comes just days after battling Richfield in a 7-5 loss in Castle Dale.
Senior Koda Alton was hit with the loss on the mound, allowing one earned run and 11 hits in 3.2 innings of work. Kyson Stilson pitched the final out in relief to help get Emery past the fourth inning.
Stilson logged one of the team’s two hits, finishing 1-2 at the plate with a single and walk. Freshman Jace Mangum finished 1-2 in the box. As a team the group left four runners on bases for the game.
Richfield senior standout Emmitt Hafen pitched a complete game shutout, striking out seven and allow just two hits. As a team Richfield combined for 14 hits, nine RBIs and one walk.
The loss sends Emery to 3-2 in Region 15 play, which places them third in division. Richfield is currently unbeaten at the top of the standings with Manti.
The Spartans will return to the field on Tuesday with a road contest against the San Juan Broncos in Blanding. The two teams will then meet again on Friday in Castle Dale to wrap up the season set.
