The Helper Recreation and Trails Committee have been very busy working on establishing some great boulder locations up Spring Canyon. The group of volunteers hopes that this will bring out bouldering and rock-climbing enthusiasts from near and far.

“We’ve got three killer boulder spots in Spring Canyon, good to go; and we’re going to put in one more work day, get about that much done again and we’re going to open it up to the public and get people up there,” said Committee Member, Fuzzy Nance. Volunteers spent the majority of Sunday, May 5 up at the locations moving dirt and rocks to gain better access to the bouldering and rock-climbing sites.

Nance has been working closely with locals, Jordan Howa and Henry Sanchez who grew up in the area and both are familiar with the locations of the bouldering sites. “As we are developing their secret spots and making them accessible to the public and making things more consumer friendly, more or less. I’m watching these two just get so stoked about finally what they have always done being legitimized and Jordan and Henry stoked is getting me more stoked about it and yea, it’s going to be a beautiful thing,” stated Nance. The volunteers are eager to get more sites cleared and useable for a possible competition or gathering during the Memorial Day weekend. A Facebook page is currently being developed called the Carbon County Climbers Alliance where more news and information can be found about bouldering and rock-climbing in the local area.

Any bicyclists that have been on the bike trails near the golf course may have noticed some clearing operations taking place which has affected some of the trails. “BLM is currently doing a pinion and juniper clearing operation. We’ve got some serious trail damage that has been done and it’s going to take a while to get things restored and cleaned up. There is a few sections where the trail has just disappeared and so if you are up there riding, please if you come to a section like that, don’t just keep riding around looking for the trails, recognize that’s it’s been damaged, maybe turn around go out take a different section,” explained Nance. Once the BLM is done with the clearing process the restructuring of the trails will then take place and volunteers are more than welcomed to assist in the project by contacting Nance.
