Another successful school year has come to an end for Carbon School District and throughout the year a weekly update has been shared on Castle Country Radio. This was an opportunity for school officials to inform the public of their activities and events that were taking place at their schools. The updates were started with Superintendent Lance Hatch welcoming students back to school in August so it is only fitting that he returned to the radio station to close out the updates as well.
This year was a big year for the Carbon School District because all of the schools made reading a high priority among the students. “We changed our focus in how we approach our reading instruction in our elementary schools and somewhat in our middle schools as well, and between leveling our books, leveling our students to find out what level they are actually reading on and providing them with enormous quantities of text at that level. We’re seeing some pretty amazing things, we don’t have all the data in yet but we’re still waiting for that to come in but what we are seeing is a dramatic improvement from last year,” stated Superintendent Hatch. What a lot of the teachers have found is that by giving students the opportunity to improve and increase their reading skills also assists them in their learning and understanding in other subjects such as science. The school district greatly appreciates the hard work from students and support from the parents in making the reading program a huge success this year.
A new addition was designed and is almost fully constructed at the Castle Valley Center location which was started the early part of the school year. “The new space that they are going to have is just amazing, the facility is beautiful – construction is very well done, it’s got all the bells and whistles that population needs like lifts in the bathrooms and swings for the kids that need that. We’re pretty excited about that. Mr. Keller and his staff are going to be able to really take advantage of that space; it’s going to be really good for kids,” explained Superintendent Hatch. The new addition was very much needed as the modular classrooms located outside are too small, old and outdated. Officials are hopeful that construction will be fully completed in June of this year.
The Carbon School District would like to wish all of their students, faculty and staff a safe and wonderful summer vacation.
