The Fourth of July holiday is quickly approaching and with the fun festivities taking place we tend to forget how the holiday can be a bit stressful for our pets. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood spoke on the very subject and had some very important information to share with pet owners.
“I wanted to remind everyone to make sure that you are conscience of your pets for the Fourth of July. The noise and all the excitement of the Fourth of July sometimes scares the pets and they run away and we want to make sure that you are conscience of that – the animal shelter fills up on the fifth of July,” said Sheriff Wood. “You know there are a few things that you can do, you can of course, if you have a kennel, you can put them in the kennel, you can bring them in the house, you can also give your dogs Benadryl, I’ve been told that will kind of settle them down a little bit, kind of calm them a little bit.” More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year so be sure that your dog is properly wearing identification just in case he/she does run off.
The annual Energy Days celebration will be taking place at the Carbon County Fairgrounds Events Center where traffic can be quite congested during and after the festivities. “Keep an eye out for the traffic across Fairgrounds Road after that event is over, there will be a steady stream of cars going both ways. We have had years where kids rode bikes up to the fairgrounds to watch the fireworks and so just keep an eye out. If you are coming home from there watch for pedestrians, watch for bike traffic, all that stuff because not everyone is going to drive a car up there because there will be people walking and riding up there,” explained Sheriff Wood. Drivers are urged to be aware of their surroundings when traveling through that area during the holiday.
For folks that may be heading out to camp Sheriff Wood had some important safety tips for you as well, “I want to remind everyone that is going out camping this summer -ATV/UTV safety, if you’re in UTV wear your seatbelt it’s made for you to stay inside it, if you’re on your ATV wear your helmet, make sure you are not overweighting the machine with too many people, don’t try to do more than the machine is capable of and try to stay at riding at 80 percent of your ability or less all the time.” Deputies will be out patrolling at the various events taking place around the area to ensure that everybody is being safe.
