Hot temperatures, fire safety, phone scam and demolition derby were the hot topics in this week’s Carbon County Sheriff weekly update.

The Pioneer Day holiday allows for residents to launch off fireworks but with the hot temperatures, it’s a risk for field fires and/or wildfires. “Just be careful and use common sense. Make sure you have a water source nearby, make sure you’re shooting your fireworks in a safe direction that’s not in an area that could burn real easy, it just scares me to death. Fireworks cause so many out of control blazes that you just want to be very careful with them,” said Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood. Other holidays that allow discharge of Class C fireworks is July 2 through 6, December 31 and on Chinese New Year’s Eve. People should understand that if a firework is launched and it causes a fire, that individual could be legally responsible for all the costs associated with that fire. Fireworks violation are a Class B Misdemeanor and that can be up to a $1,000.00 fine or six months in jail.

A phone scam is making its way around the area and it’s causing folks to get very upset. “I’ve been dealing with the latest scam around. So the scammers will call, they generally prey on folks that have grandchildren and they’ll call and say that your grandchild owes money to the court or needs to post bail or there’s a warrant out for their arrest and if you don’t pay this money right now they’re going to go to prison,” explained Sheriff Wood. The courts, law enforcement officials will never call individuals or their families asking for money. Folks should remember this when speaking with the scammers, if all else fails contact law enforcement or your banking institution. They both are well aware of the phone scams that are making the rounds.

Demolition derby tickets are now on sale throughout the city. “You can already buy your tickets in advance, you can get them from Tire King, you can get them from Grako’s Tire, Dinosaur Tire or Rocky Mountain Care – they’re selling tickets in advance you save $2.00 off the gate price if you buy them in advance,” stated Sheriff Wood. Tickets can also be purchased from the Sheriff’s Office or from a Search and Rescue Member. Advance ticket prices are $13.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids.
