Carbon County wants to hear from the public about its plans to start a program to breathe new life into communities by reusing and redeveloping brownfield sites (underutilized, abandoned and/or contaminated property).

A series of public meetings will be held to provide information about the Carbon County Community Revitalization Program. The meetings are scheduled for Monday August 5th in Helper, Tuesday August 6th in Wellington, Wednesday August 7th in Price and Thursday August 8th in East Carbon.

The coalition, which includes Carbon County and the cities of Price, Helper, Wellington and East was awarded a $600,000 brownfields assessment grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in April 2018 and the money was first available last October.

“The goal is to use the funding to transform underutilized properties from liabilities into assets that revitalize our community and bring our neighborhoods back to life,” said Casey Hopes, Carbon County Commissioner. “We are inviting business owners, property owners, community organization members and residents to join us and learn more about this program,” said Helper Mayor Lenise Peterman.

Meeting attendees will find out more about the impact of brownfield sites on the livelihood, health, and safety of communities, as well as plans to transform blighted areas into viable spaces that provide employment opportunities and enhance neighborhoods.

There will also be a discussion on priority revitalization sites and focus areas, redevelopment strategies and desired outcomes, as well as community involvement opportunities. Free food will be served.
