Home safety is very important to ensure the safety of your family. Taking easy safety measures like adding security lighting around the home, preparing for possible flooding and checking your smoke detectors all can prevent accidents and/or disasters from happening. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood had some great ideas for residents to follow when it comes to home and property safety.
“You know a few things that you can do that are just simple, I’ve been doing some things around my house. You can buy these solar-powered lights, so if you have like a shed that sits off to itself, that’s in a dark corner and there is no power there you can buy these solar-powered lights, its motion-activated, turns on kind of to alert you if anything is going on down there, I recommend you doing that,” stated Sheriff Wood. Security lighting around the home is vital to help visitors find the pathway to your home, plus it increases a homeowner’s sense of safety and more importantly discourages intruders from entering the home or property.
Another important thing to prepare for is possible flooding around your home, especially in our area. “And then you know in the fall we have the potential for the monsoonal rains and that’s when we get flooded so make sure your gutters are cleaned, make sure your ditches are cleaned, just get things done around the place, now’s a good time to get that done,” said Sheriff Wood. This is also a great time to replace any batteries in any smoke and carbon monoxide detectors inside the home, plus check the dates on any fire extinguishers.
Last but definitely not least, the Sheriff had some important words regarding back to school, “You know we always talk about it but back to school time means watch for the kids in the school zones and be cautious because they aren’t going to be watching for you.”
