Each week Carbon School District shines a light on one of the schools within the district and this week’s focus is on Helper Middle School.  Students and faculty have settled in quite nicely as they are moving forward through another school year.

One of the many things taking place is participation in all the fall sports. “We have football, volleyball, golf, cross-country all in full swing. Good involvement with 40 kids on the football team, 20 kids on the volleyball team, cross-country is coming, running every day, I think they get another kid to come out and give it a shot. We have a little golf program where we only have a couple of kids playing but with the help of Jenny Gagon, Mont Harmon, we joined together and we put a crew together that’s Carbon Golf,” said Football Coach Phil Howa. The student-athletes have been working hard both on and off the court.

The Carbon County School District is proposing to issue a General Election Bond to finance the structural upgrades, additions and general upgrades necessary to continue serving the students in both Carbon High School and Helper Middle School. “Well, I want to make sure that everybody knows that Helper Middle is not going anywhere. The bond that the school district is proposing almost a full third of that is going to be directed to Helper Middle School to make sure that it is still continuing for the foreseeable future. The building isn’t going anywhere and this is a really decent time to do a re-fit and make it last,” said Principal Robert Bradley. The school is looking to do some structural improvements, plus heating, electrical, plumbing enhancements, in addition to adding some student common areas within the school.

There have been some other great things that have taken place this year as Principal Bradley explains, “The State Legislature has given money to school districts, is called TSSA money, I don’t remember what the acronym stands for right now but what that allowed our school district to do is to direct that towards mental health. We now have counselors, full-time counselors in every elementary school where we didn’t before. We had a counselor being shared between places. We have school therapists at every secondary school that are able to provide some really excellent mental health counseling mental health support for the students in Carbon County.” School officials are looking forward to the new and much needed counseling services as it moves forward.
