In their first game of the 3A State Championship Tournament, the Lady Spartans would face the Grantsville Cowboys the No. 7 seed with an overall record of 11-6 and 6-4 in region. Emery would take the match 3-1 to advance to the quaterfinal round on Saturday.
The Spartans entered the tournament as the No. 10 seed with a record of 10-7 overall and a conference record of 8-2. Emery is on quite a tear lately, winning five of their last six matches and might be peaking at the right time headed into their next match.
Up next for the Spartans is a rematch of sorts with the Judge Memorial Bulldogs, the No. 2 seed. Judge sent Emery home last year in the playoffs after a 4-0 loss. Judge would eventually go all the way to the championship game only to be defeated by the Morgan Trojans. The Bulldogs lost 11 seniors off of last years squad, but are still a force, registering records of 13-3 overall and 8-2 in region.
Emery will need to have an answer for sophomore forward/midfielder Caeli Sherman and her 25 goals, and Judge’s tandem of goal keepers, sophomore Kate Borgmeier or junior Kate Bellew who have combined this season for eight shutouts.
The match against Judge will start at noon on Saturday the 19th in Salt Lake City on the Bulldog’s home field.
