Three top 10 finishes propelled the Carbon High School boy’s cross country team to its first ever 3A State Championship Wednesday afternoon at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.
Accumulating 57 points, the Dinos easily defeated second-place Richfield’s score of 90. Morgan ended third with a 107. Emery and Grantsville completed the top five in the field of ten.
Senior Chad Page logged the top finish for the Dinos, completing the course with a time of 16:25.3 for sixth place overall. Fellow senior James Bryner finished eighth and Ryan Page ended ninth. Carbon was the only school to have three runners place inside the top 10.
Shane Scaugard recorded the fourth score for Carbon with a time of 17.15.1. The fifth and final tally came from sophomore Kobe Cruz with a time of 17:19.7.
Wednesday’s state title completed a perfect season for the Dinos, who also walked away with a Region 12 championship earlier this month.
The state championship is the second for Carbon within the last year after the girl’s swimming team claimed the title this past February.
The Carbon Lady Dinos also competed Wednesday at the state finale, finishing ninth overall.
Senior standout athlete Grace Broadbear was the top placing individual for Carbon, finishing 17th with a time of 21:20.2. Ambree Jones delivered the other top 20 finish for the team.
Samantha Schaaugard, Gracie Tatton and Erin Stromness completed the five scores for the Lady Dinos.
