A powerful first and third quarter was enough to lift the Emery Lady Spartans past the Beaver Beavers for its second straight win Wednesday night on the road.
Entering the non-league tilt 1-1 on the season, Emery opened a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The lead dwindled to four at the break, but a 14-7 run in the third quarter gave the Lady Spartans a sizable lead and the eventual win.
“Coach Marshall is extremely seasoned and they like to make it physical,” said head coach Lynn Tuttle. “It’s a difficult gym to play in and we never shoot well in it. That was the same situation tonight, but we picked up the energy defensively in the second half.”
Senior Kiri Cook led the way for Emery in the win with a game-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. In three games this season Cook is averaging 13 points per contest and also snagging six board per game.
“In the first half Kiri was six-for-six on field goal attempts,” said head Tuttle. “We’re happy with where she is at right now. One of the things she’s really improved on is finishing at the rim and we’re seeing that each night.”
Hailey Allred provided a second offensive weapon as she finished with 13 points, six of which came from deep. Tambrie Tuttle ended with nine and Tayden Nielson scored seven.
Wednesday’s win moves Emery to 2-1 on the season and marks the second win in as many days for the team. The busy week will come to a close Thursday night at the Spartan Center against 3A’s Morgan Trojans.
Live coverage of Thursday’s contest will begin at 6:30 on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM. Tip-off will follow at 7:00.
