Despite a slow start the Carbon Dinos recovered nicely in a 64-61 win over the Union Cougars Wednesday evening at home.
Looking to rebound from a hefty loss last week to Delta, Carbon delivered a 24-point second quarter to erase an early deficit. The two teams remained close throughout, but it was Carbon that came out on top for the win.
Senior guard Brady Gagon connected on five three-point attempts to pace the Dinos with 26 points in the victory. Kaleb Nelson was a force inside as he recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Noah Bradford also reached double-figures as he finished with 12 points, including three makes from deep. Carbon ended with a decisive advantage from the three-point line, knocking down 10 shots from the perimeter compared to six for Union.
Keaston Young ended with 16 points to help keep the Cougars within striking distance. Jaden Gardner also finished with 16 points, while Jobe Rust reached double-figures with 11.
Wednesday’s victory moves Carbon to 5-3 overall on the season, placing them No. 12 in the first UHSAA RPI rankings. The loss dips Union to 0-8, putting the Cougars in last at No. 19 in the RPI.
Carbon will return to the basketball court on Friday with a road trip to Juab to take on the Wasps in the final game before the Christmas Break. Live coverage will begin at 6:30 on KRPX 95.3 The Peak, followed by tip-off at 7:00.
