On December 19 the initial Utah High School Activities Association RPI rankings for Boys 3A basketball were released. With Carbon and Emery both on the Christmas break the rankings came out before they will start region play in a couple weeks.
At the top currently sits Manti with a 10-1 record, following them at No. 2 is the undefeated San Juan Broncos. At No. 3 is Judge Memorial with a record of 5-3. Standing at No. 4 is last years state champion Morgan, also with a 5-3 record, and rounding out the top 5 is Richfield with a record of 6-3.
The Emery Spartans are just outside the top 5 at No. 6. The Spartans hold a record of 6-2 heading into the break. They will take to the floor on January 4, when they will take on the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs on the road. They won’t play at the Spartan Center again until January 11, when they will welcome in North Sanpete.
The Dinos currently sit at No. 14. They started out at No. 12 but their loss to Juab dropped them to places. The Dinos will play on December 30 at Maple Mountain in a make-up game from December 14 that was postponed due to weather. They will play at home on January 10 as they welcome Emery to Price.
The RPI will be used for seeding come playoff time in February. The No. 12-19 teams will play first round games with teams ranked higher than 12 receiving a first round bye.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
