The Utah High School Activities Association released the initial RPI rankings of the year with the Carbon Lady Dinos ranked #6 and the Emery Lady Spartans at #7.
At the top of the rankings sits 8-0 Grantsville, last years 3A runner up. The Dinos faced Granstville on November 26 losing 64-57. The second spot goes to Judge Memorial at 7-1. The Lady Spartans played Judge Memorial back on December 17, Emery fell 62-36 suffering their worst loss since 2015. Rounding out the top five are three teams that both Carbon and Emery will face in the coming weeks as they all reside in Region 12. No. 3 belongs to South Sevier at 11-0, No. 4 Richfield and No.5 San Juan.
Carbon is sitting at No. 6 with a 7-4 record. The Lady Dinos return to the court tomorrow (Friday) at home against Uintah. They then will travel to Kamas on the 2nd of January to face the South Summit Wildcats, before beginning conference play on January 7 when they will host South Sevier.
Emery takes the #7 spot sitting at 6-4. They won’t return to the court until January 3 when they travel to Vernal to take on the Uintah Utes. They will start region play on January 7 when they welcome Richfield to the Spartan Center. They will also host Carbon on January 9.
The RPI will be used for seeding come playoff time in February. The No. 12-19 teams will play first round games with teams ranked higher than 12 receiving a first round bye.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
