Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood recently returned from the Western State Sheriff’s Conference and was excited to stop by Castle Country Radio to talk about his trip, as well as speaking about the Sheriff’s Office hiring process.

“I went to see the Western State Sheriff’s Conference, I met with sheriffs from all over the west, I think seventeen states, Kansas, Texas all over the western United States,” explained Sheriff Wood. “So I went by myself this time with the purpose to meet different people from all over and just talk to people about issues that they have and how their sheriff’s office is run. It was good conversations, met a lot of good sheriffs from all over the place and it was well worth it, I think it was a good week.” The Western States Sheriffs’ Association is comprised of Sheriffs and their command staff from 17 Western States and was formed in 1993 in an effort to allow Sheriffs to assist each other in fulfilling their duties and obligations related to law enforcement in their respective counties.

There have been many times that Sheriff Jeff Wood has been approached about how to obtain employment at the Sheriff’s Office and he explains the process, “The state statute requires that we go through the Merit Board for our road positions. So, there’s two different rosters there’s road rosters and jail rosters. The road rosters have to go through the Merit Board which we are right now going through a process, we just did a roster there. It requires they take a written test, physical test and an oral interview and the Merit Board themselves actually rank them. So that is how we hire for the road, the jail’s different it doesn’t have to go under the Merit Board – we do it similar though, there’s a jail roster, we go through an interview process, we rank everybody then we do the same thing and bring them in.” Any interested individuals that are thinking of pursuing a career in law enforcement are urged to speak with the Sheriff or any deputies about their own personal experience.
