The Carbon School District weekly update shines the spotlight on Creekview Elementary where students have been busy with the science fair, archery and improving reading levels. Castle Country Radio had a chance to sit down with third-grade teacher, Mrs. Elaine Taylor to talk about all the fun activities taking place at the school.

The number of participants in the this year’s science fair was the most the school has ever had, as Mrs. Taylor explains, “This year we had the most participants that we’ve had since I’ve been helping with it we had almost 200 participants and they worked super hard and we couldn’t do it without the community’s help. Businesses and individuals that came to volunteer to help us do judging and volunteer to give us prizes for the kids for working hard, so we owe them a big thank you.” The science fair is held every year to spark interest into the subject of science and it also prepares the older students for when they move on to junior high as it’s a requirement to participate in the science fair at that grade level.

Archery has become a popular extracurricular activity around the area and this year marks the first time that the school has formed its own archery team. “This was our very first year of exploring archery so we had some great teachers that said hey we want to bring this to our school because the rest of the district is doing it and we actually took second in state this year. So super proud of them and the work that they put in to get there,” said Mrs. Taylor. The archery team is busy practicing and preparing for the National Competition which will be held in Salt Lake City in April.

Creekview is like any other school in the district that is perfecting their reading skills. “In our school, at mid-year, that was right before Christmas we did testing and we were at 48 percent of the students are proficient in reading and our goal is 60 percent, so we’re well on our way, we think that we will reach that goal, hoping we will exceed that goal so the kids have been working hard,” explained Mrs. Taylor. An emphasis on reading can improve a student’s vocabulary and understanding, plus it helps with concentration.
