The Emery Spartans opened the brand new soccer season by playing three-games in as many days Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the road in St. George.
Playing for the first time this season on Thursday, the Spartans were shutout in a 4-0 setback to 5A Alta’s Junior Varsity team. Following the loss in the season opener, Emery would return to the field the following day against competition in their own classification.
Allowing three goals in the first half, the Spartans dipped to 0-2 on the season after suffering a 3-1 loss to the Union Cougars on Friday afternoon.
Emery’s Alex Noriega scored the team’s lone goal of the game. All four goals between the two teams were scored in the first half as both defenses pitched shutouts in the second.
The weekend came to a close for the Spartans on Saturday afternoon as the team suffered a second shutout, this time to 4A Stansbury 7-0.
Trailing 4-0 at the end of the first half, Emery allowed three more goals in the final stanza. The loss put Emery at 0-3 for the weekend.
The Spartans will have an opportunity to get back on track and earn their first victory of the season when they return to the field against Richfield on the road Tuesday afternoon in the Region 12 opener. Three of the team’s first four league games will take place on the road.
The second and final game of the week will take place Thursday at home against South Sevier. Start time for the home opener is scheduled for 4:00 p.m..
