Castle Country Radio had the opportunity to sit down with Carbon School District Superintendent Lance Hatch to discuss teachers, academic curriculum and the breakfast/lunch program as school is on a two-week dismissal due to the COVID-19 virus.
“We received today some information from the CDC coming through the Utah State Board of Education that informed us that there are now restrictions on groups of 10 or more so that has caused us to rethink how we are proceeding all of the school districts in the State of Utah are having to almost on a daily basis make adjustments,” said Superintendent Hatch. At this time the school district is limiting how many members of the faculty/staff can be inside the building at one time. This has been a huge change as many teachers have been at work the last few days trying to design a curriculum plan for their students.
Curriculum for junior high and high school students will be done through their Chromebooks but it will be different for elementary students as Superintendent Hatch explains, “We have asked that all elementary parents make arrangements to come and pick up packets on Wednesday and we want to really stress the importance of that. These packets include very important activities, books, things that students need to be able to make the next couple of weeks productive. So we really need to make sure that parents understand that they need to make arrangements to come pick those up on Wednesday.” The curriculum will cover the current two-week dismissal if a longer time period is needed the district will address further curriculum at that time.
Many residents may have noticed that school busses are still running in the morning and early afternoons this is due to the district providing students with breakfast/lunch through their food program. “You know the transportation department has stepped up, our bus drivers, Bruce Bean who heads up that department, they’ve just been willing to do whatever is needed. Heidi Anderson from the Food Department has been working with her people and somehow, someway we were able to find 60 paraprofessionals to help out on top of all the food workers. It’s just a massive effort to get these breakfast and lunches into the hands of students. We hope everyone in the community will take advantage of this, it’s free,” stated Superintendent Hatch.
