It’s unfortunate that during dire times scammers are finding ways to exploit the coronavirus fears. There are a few scams going on that Sheriff Jeff Wood wanted to let the community know about so that they don’t fall victim.

“You know I hate the fact that humans can sometimes be extremely cruel in times of need but there are scams going around. I actually got a call yesterday that I think was a scam call. Over the phone they’ll call and tell you that your results are in and that you tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and then they will ask you for credit card information so they can get you some medication coming to help you with that,” said Sheriff Wood. This is a scam, never share any personal information over the phone. If you feel that you have been scammed contact your banking institution and/or local law enforcement.

There is also a more aggressive scam that is making the rounds as Sheriff Jeff Wood explains, “We have not seen this in Carbon County at all but I’ve heard it’s happening elsewhere in the world. People are going from door to door with a fake test and they’re saying, oh, we’re here to test you for COVID-19 and then when your guard is down, they’ll try to jump you and rob you. So don’t allow people to do stuff like that and if you see anything suspicious report it to law enforcement so we can get right on it.” Community members should look out for each other and report anything out of the ordinary.

The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office has received some phone calls about the current restrictions set forth by the Southeast Utah Health Department and wanted to clarify for those that are concerned about travel. “The other thing I want to talk about is they’ve put out those restrictions and people have asked me about the travel restrictions for Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties. Those are guidelines by the Health Department; you’re allowed to travel but they’re asking for you to not travel unless it is necessary. So that doesn’t mean that you can’t go places if you have to go, you’re welcome to go. But if you don’t need to go somewhere, they’re asking that you not travel and not running the risk of exposing yourself or others,” stated Sheriff Wood.
